How to Take Shilajit: A Simple Guide to Resin, Drops, Capsules and Gummies

How to take shilajit: resin dissolved in warm tea

Shilajit is easy to take once you know how, but the first jar of resin can be a little confusing. It's sticky, it changes texture with the temperature, and it tastes strong. This guide shows you exactly how to take shilajit in each of its four forms, how to make the taste easier, and the mistakes that trip most people up.

The short answer

For resin, dissolve a pea-size piece (about 0.5 g) in a glass of warm water, tea or milk once a day. For drops, add the label serving to any drink. For capsules, swallow one with water. For gummies, chew one or two after a meal. Take it every day at a time that suits you, and stick to the label serving.

How to take shilajit resin, step by step

1. Warm your drink. Heat a glass of water, tea or milk until it's warm but not boiling. Very hot liquid isn't necessary and makes it harder to drink straight away.

2. Scoop a pea-size piece. Use the small spoon that comes with the jar to take about 0.5 g, roughly the size of a pea or a grain of rice for smaller servings. If the resin is hard, leave the spoon in warm water for a few seconds first.

3. Stir until it dissolves. Real shilajit dissolves almost completely in warm liquid within a minute or two, turning it a golden to dark brown colour.

4. Drink it. Drink it while it's warm. A small amount of fine residue at the bottom is normal.

Some people prefer to place the resin under the tongue and let it dissolve. That works too, but the taste is much stronger, so most people stick with a drink.

How to make shilajit taste better

Shilajit resin tastes earthy, smoky and bitter. If that puts you off, try it in strong black tea, coffee or warm milk, which hide the taste far better than water. A little honey or lemon in warm water helps too. If you've tried all of those and still can't get used to it, drops in coffee, tasteless capsules or gummies are easier options, and they come from the same source.

How to take shilajit drops

Shake the bottle, measure the serving on the label (ours is 0.5 ml) and add it to water, coffee, tea, juice or a smoothie. Drops dissolve straight away, so there's no stirring or waiting. They're the easiest format to take with you when you travel.

How to take shilajit capsules

Swallow one capsule with a glass of water or milk once a day. There's no taste and nothing to measure. Capsules suit people who want shilajit to fit into an existing vitamin routine.

How to take shilajit gummies

Chew one or two gummies a day, ideally after a meal. Don't take more than the label says, even though they taste good. Store them somewhere cool so they don't soften and stick together.

How to eat shilajit: can you eat it straight?

You can swallow a pea-size piece of resin straight or let it melt in your mouth, and some people do. It's safe to take that way, but dissolving it in a warm drink is more pleasant and makes it easier to take the same amount every day.

When should you take it?

There's no evidence that one time of day is better than another. Most people take it in the morning with their first drink so they don't forget. Our guide on when to take shilajit covers morning, evening and before bed.

How much should you take?

Follow the serving on your product's label. Most studies used 250 to 500 mg a day. If you combine formats on the same day, keep your total to one label serving. Our shilajit dosage guide explains servings in more detail.

How to store shilajit

Keep the lid tightly closed and store the jar somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight. Resin hardens in the cold and softens in the heat. That's normal and doesn't affect it. Always use a clean, dry spoon so no moisture gets into the jar.

Common mistakes to avoid

Taking too much. More isn't better, and there's no research on high doses.

Giving up too soon. The studies ran for 8 to 12 weeks of daily use, not a few days.

Using boiling water. Warm is enough, and it's easier to drink.

Buying untested shilajit. If a brand can't show you a lab report, you don't know what you're taking. Read our guide on how to tell if shilajit is real.
