Shilajit went from an obscure Ayurvedic tonic to something you see all over your feed in about three years. That speed brings a lot of noise with it. This guide answers the questions people actually ask before they buy — what the stuff is, how much to take, whether it belongs in your morning or your evening, and what the testosterone research really shows.

No hype, no miracle claims. Just what’s known, what isn’t, and how to use it sensibly.

Short version: Shilajit is a purified plant-mineral resin from high-altitude rock. Most people take 300–500 mg a day dissolved in warm water. Morning on an empty stomach is the common default, but evening works fine for most. Give it 6–8 weeks before judging it, and never buy a batch without third-party heavy-metal testing.

What Is Shilajit?

Shilajit is a sticky, blackish-brown resin that seeps out of cracks in rock faces at high altitude, mostly during the summer months when the rock warms up. You’ll find it in the Himalayas, the Altai range, the Caucasus, and parts of Tibet and Iran.

It isn’t a plant, and it isn’t quite a mineral either. Over centuries, layers of plant matter got trapped and compressed between rock, then slowly broken down by microbial activity and pressure. What’s left is a dense organic-mineral compound that mountain communities have collected and used for a very long time.

The names vary by region. Ayurvedic texts classify it as a rasayana — a rejuvenating substance. In Russia and Central Asia it’s called mumijo. In Pakistan and northern India you’ll hear salajeet. Same material, different traditions.

One thing worth stating plainly: raw shilajit scraped off a rock is not food. It carries soil contaminants, and depending on the source, heavy metals. Anything you swallow should have gone through a proper purification process and come back clean on a lab test.

What Is Shilajit Made Of?

Composition shifts depending on altitude, source rock, and how the resin was processed. But the active fraction is fairly consistent:

Fulvic acid The headline compound. Acts as a carrier molecule and antioxidant. Quality resin typically tests in the 15–20% range.
Dibenzo-α-pyrones DBPs. Small molecules linked in research to mitochondrial energy transfer.

Trace minerals Iron, magnesium, zinc, potassium and dozens of others, in very small amounts.

You’ll see brands advertise “85+ minerals.” That number is technically true and largely beside the point — most are present in trace quantities far below a meaningful dietary dose. The fulvic acid and DBP content is the part that actually distinguishes a good resin from a mediocre one.

What Is Shilajit Used For?

Traditionally, it was taken as a general restorative — for stamina, recovery, and resilience at altitude. Modern research has picked at a handful of specific areas:

  • Energy and fatigue. The most commonly reported effect. Proposed mechanism involves mitochondrial function and coenzyme Q10 activity rather than stimulation.
  • Male reproductive health. The best-studied application, covered in its own section below.
  • Exercise recovery. Small trials have looked at muscle strength retention and post-training soreness.
  • Cognitive function. Early-stage work, mostly preclinical.
  • Iron status. Fulvic acid appears to help with mineral transport and absorption.
  • Altitude adaptation. A long-standing traditional use, and the subject of some Indian high-altitude research.

Being straight with you: most of these studies are small, several are short, and some were funded by supplement manufacturers. The signal is interesting. It isn’t settled.

Is Shilajit Good for You?

For most healthy adults, a properly purified resin taken at a sensible dose is well tolerated and has a reasonable evidence base behind a few of its claims. That’s an honest answer, and it’s more measured than most of what you’ll read.

What it is not: a replacement for sleep, protein, or training. People who report the strongest results are usually the ones who were already doing the basics and added shilajit on top. If your sleep is five hours a night, no resin is going to fix your energy levels.

The single biggest variable in whether shilajit is “good for you” isn’t the substance — it’s the sourcing. Unpurified or adulterated product is genuinely risky. Tested product from a transparent supplier is a different proposition entirely.

How Do You Take Shilajit?

Resin is the traditional form. Scoop a portion roughly the size of a grain of rice up to a small pea, drop it into warm water, and stir. Keep the water warm rather than boiling — high heat degrades fulvic acid, so anything above about 60°C / 140°F is working against you.

It takes 30 to 60 seconds of stirring to break up. The water turns a cloudy golden-brown or reddish colour. The taste is bitter, smoky and mineral-heavy; plenty of people mix it into warm milk or add honey and lemon instead of drinking it straight. In cold weather the resin stiffens up considerably — warming the jar in your hands or running the spoon under hot water makes it far easier to work with.

Gummies solve the two problems people quit resin over: the taste and the guesswork on portion size. Each one is pre-dosed. The trade-off is that the shilajit content per gummy is usually lower than a resin serving, and you’re also getting the other ingredients that make a gummy a gummy. Read the label for milligrams of shilajit extract, not the weight of the gummy itself.

On an empty stomach or with food? Empty stomach is the usual recommendation, on the theory that absorption is better. If it leaves you queasy, take it with a meal instead. Consistency matters more than optimisation here.

How Much Shilajit Should You Take Every Day?

The common daily range for purified resin is 300 to 500 mg. Clinical work has generally sat inside that window — the frequently cited 2016 fertility trial used 250 mg twice daily for 90 days.

If you’re new to it, start at the bottom. Around 250–300 mg for the first week or two lets you see how you respond before you increase. There’s no advantage to loading up; more resin doesn’t produce more effect, and the mineral content means very large doses aren’t sensible long term.

A practical note on measuring: a rice-grain portion is roughly 250–300 mg, and a small pea is closer to 500 mg. Eyeballing it is fine once you’ve calibrated, but a small scale removes the doubt for the first few weeks.

When Is the Best Time to Take Shilajit?

Morning, before food, is the traditional practice and the most common modern recommendation. It’s a reasonable default: your stomach is empty, and if the substance does affect your energy, you’d rather that land during the day.

If you’re training, some people take it 60–90 minutes before a session. Others split the dose — half in the morning, half in the afternoon — which mirrors how the twice-daily research protocols were structured.

The honest answer is that no study has directly compared timing schedules. Pick a slot you’ll actually stick to.

Can You Take Shilajit at Night?

Yes, and for a lot of people it’s a perfectly good option. Shilajit isn’t a stimulant. There’s no caffeine in it, and the energy effect people describe is metabolic and gradual rather than the sharp lift you get from coffee.

That said, responses vary. A minority of people do report feeling alert or restless if they take it late, and if that’s you, move it to the morning and the problem solves itself. Others deliberately take it in the evening because they associate it with better recovery overnight.

A workable approach: run it in the morning for two weeks so you know your baseline response, then try an evening dose and compare. You’ll have your answer quickly.

One caveat — if you’re taking it in warm milk before bed, that’s a fairly heavy drink close to sleep for some stomachs. Warm water is lighter.

Is Shilajit Good for Testosterone?

This is the claim that drove most of shilajit’s recent popularity, and it has more research behind it than the others — though less than the marketing suggests.

The study people cite was published in Andrologia in 2016. Men with diagnosed infertility took 250 mg of purified shilajit twice daily for 90 days, and the group showed statistically significant increases in total testosterone, free testosterone and DHEAS compared with baseline. An earlier trial from 2010 reported improvements in sperm count and motility on a similar protocol.

The caveats matter. Sample sizes were modest. Participants had existing fertility problems, which means the results don’t automatically transfer to a healthy man with normal testosterone. And the effect, where it appeared, took the full 90 days.

Reasonable takeaway: there’s a real signal here worth paying attention to, particularly if your levels are already low. It is not a substitute for medical treatment, and anyone expecting the kind of shift you’d get from prescribed therapy will be disappointed.

How Long Does Shilajit Take to Work?

Longer than most people expect, which is why a lot of first-time buyers give up too early.

  • Weeks 1–2: Usually nothing dramatic. Some people notice slightly steadier energy through the afternoon.
  • Weeks 3–6: This is where most self-reported changes start showing up — recovery, stamina, general baseline.
  • Weeks 8–12: The window the clinical trials used. If you’re assessing whether it works for you, judge it here rather than at day ten.

Taking it consistently at a moderate dose beats taking it sporadically at a high one.

How Can You Tell If Shilajit Is Real?

The market has a counterfeit problem. Adulterated product cut with clay, ash or humic shale is common, and some of it carries heavy metal levels well above safe limits.

Signs of genuine resin: tar-like and sticky at room temperature, pliable when warm, brittle enough to snap when cold. Dropped into warm water it disperses gradually into a golden-brown or reddish cloud without leaving grit at the bottom of the glass.

Warning signs: a chalky or sandy texture, no stated origin, no third-party certificate of analysis, “100% pure” claims with nothing to back them, and pricing that’s dramatically below everything else on the market. Purification and testing cost money — a price that seems too good usually reflects skipped steps.

Does Shilajit Have Side Effects?

Purified shilajit is generally well tolerated. When side effects do occur they’re usually mild and early on — some stomach upset, occasionally a headache or light-headedness in the first few days. Lowering the dose typically resolves it.

Talk to a doctor before starting if any of these apply to you:

  • You’re pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have haemochromatosis or elevated iron levels — shilajit contains iron and aids its absorption
  • You have gout or a history of high uric acid
  • You take blood thinners or blood pressure medication
  • You have a hormone-sensitive condition
  • You’re giving it to anyone under 18

And the rule that doesn’t bend: never consume raw, unpurified shilajit, whatever the seller tells you about it being “natural.”

Can You Take Shilajit Every Day?

Yes. Daily use at 300–500 mg is the standard pattern, and the clinical protocols ran continuously for 90 days without issue.

Some people cycle it — eight to twelve weeks on, then a week or two off. There’s no strong evidence that cycling is necessary, but it’s a sensible habit with any supplement you’re taking long term, and it gives you a natural point to assess whether it’s doing anything for you.
